This has been out for a while now, but I wanted to talk a bit about it here.
The final sequence with Warren flying the Waco was of course the Air to Air portion that is the focus of Dad’s class. I was sitting in the backseat of the Cessna CG182 filming both the students as they photographed Warren and Warren in the Waco. Switching lenses in flight isn’t an option, so I had the D4s set up with the Nikon 80-400 for Warren in the Waco and the D810 set up with the 24-85 for filming inside the Cessna.
The difficultly though was really in shooting on the right side. If you sit in the shooter’s seat where the students were, you shoot to your left and it’s very comfortable, which is ideally how you want to shoot Air to Air. The students did all the directing of Warren, so I just filmed the action.
Another difficulty was that I was filming through a window, which meant removing the color cast from the window in post. Occasionally there would be a glint off the glass as well which is not easily removed from video. The best solution was to simply change my shooting angle a bit to get the glint out of the way. And because we were constantly turning, the glint usually did not last long.
